Multiple covers in box sets

Something that I've come across.... I've been buying "aging rocker  Cheesy Grin " CDs which have "new" covers, in that they are different to the original LP (ahem, that's vinyl to our younger readers Wink ); also some "double CDs" which have two "originals" (LP or CD) in a "new" cover; as an example, the Ozric Tentacles "doubles" have covers which are a melange of the two originals.

It would be nice to be able to input both the "new" cover, and the original(s).

This is something that I would like also ... and I think that it has been requested before!

My ideas are nowhere near being fully formed but here's two (edit....having written this post, it may be four variants  Wink) dfferent examples of what I have in mind.

1. Deep Purple "Machine Head: Anniversary Edition"

This is an instance where an old "album" is reissued on CD with a slip case displaying a "special anniversary cover". Once removed from the slip case, the jewel case cover is a reproduction of the original LP cover. So here I would like to see both new and original/alternative covers.

and FWIW there are other Deep Purple "anniversary" CDs which have a new slip cover ("Burn" & "Fireball" spring to mind). There is even an anniversary edition of "In Rock" where the "anniversary text" is actually printed onto the transparent CD case, thus showing the original cover on the booklet underneath.

An extension of this is the Led Zeppelin LP/CD "In Through The Out Door" which actually have a multiplicity of covers (from memory..., four for the LP and six for the CD! (and speaking as a keen amateur photographer, a wonderful series of sepia-tinted photographs from (I assume) a single shoot, that is tempting me to go out and buy all the variants so as to get the complete series.......cracking stuff, Gromit!).

2. Now all of the above relates to a single album, which then leads on to my next idea for "double releases", such as the Ozric Tentacles re-releases (search on Amazon UK and you'll find 'em). In this case two albums are packaged together. The interesting thing here is that the cover of the double package is a melange of the two original covers....some very clever artwork.

Now my thinking here, is that as there are two CDs  in each package (each CD has only those tracks which were on the original LP/tape), I can set these up as a box set of two children under the parent "double release". In this case it would be nice to have the parent show the parent cover, but have the children show their own "original" covers.

A variation on this is a series of "double" Beach Boys albums, where the tracks from both original albums are presented on a single CD. Therefore it is technically a "flat" CD box set (i.e. no children).......but I would ideally like to have both original covers. This is, I suppose, more along the lines of the "alternative cover" of point 1 above, but I'm still working on this one.....(which is, of course, a euphamism for "I haven't a clue how to handle this one!"  Grin).

So there you have it, a few musings and ramblings......helped by a glass of Jack Daniels and a Nightwish album on the cans...

Discuss!

How about Boxsets like the Grateful Dead's BEYOND DESCRIPTION and THE GOLDEN ROAD - twelve CDs each and Eagles EAGLES - nine CDs.

It will be great if all the respective covers would be available in the database.
