Music on Hard Drive

For various historic reasons I've got a lot of music only on my hard drive (about 18,000 pieces, the other 6-8,000 are also on CD). Also, as a collector (very amatuer so far), I have many versions of the same piece (title) by the same person/group but from different sources/CDs/etc, and also with/by different artists/groups/etc.
I just bought a high end sound card etc so that we can save all of our vinyl and tapes on the HDD and CDs.
I'm looking for software that will catalogue all of these variations. I'd also like to have and compare the data such as bit rate, sampling, etc for each piece.
So far my research suggests that I have to download and try the software before I'll get the answers. I tried 2-3 such efforts a couple of years ago, without success, and am only now getting back to it.
Any info would be appreciated.
