The tags <dax:primaryname/> and <dax:sortname/> appear to return the same value (the sort name). I've seen this behavior in 6.2.4.

This is unusual. What Artist Manager displays in sort name and primary name fields for that artist?

I cannot get this the happen again. I am not sure what changed, except that I did compact the database, which recovered maybe 1% of the space.
If I can duplicate it in the future, I'll try to recall more details about what happened, and post them here.
